Were the Stars my Eyes,

I could truly see-

not just worldly Beauty-

but- vast Eternity.

I never knew that

opening the white door,

leaving the painted white porch,

and walking into the grass,

into the trees, out

onto the hill,

would open up a new world for me-

one that was not even far

from home-

until I did so.

If I could spread my Arms

and embrace the Land:

the Hills- Fields- Mountains-

Forests both small and grand-

I would then hold

a Treasure unknown

by so many- though-

It has always- been.

Life stretches toward both horizons

The dog excitedly barks at children across the street

Wind stirs curtains, leaves

Spruce branches sway like green tentacles

Birds peel their old plumage and blow their flutes

The robin inflates its heart

Clouds coalesce and disperse like cottonwood seeds

Sky opens and closes its perforated maw

Hours are marked by color and the sun’s position

Rain falls

Horns blare

Sprouts greenly fork out of soil

Wind ebbs and flows

Flowers brighten

Each horizon darkens to be lit again

Susceptible to Change-

like the weather-

is this land I roam;

great Fields of Heather,

boiling Seas of Grass,

Earth like planks of Wood,

Woods bursting upward-

each tree bears a hood.

Turned our backs on the

fruit of the land.

Forgotten labor,

turning to markets instead.

Forgotten to rejoice with rainfall

and sunlight falling on the earth.

Forgotten the cycle of everything,

even though it is the cycle of our lives.

Wheat Fields Under Cloudy Skies

painting by Vincent van Gogh

Sky with its blue scales
does not daunt
pastoral fields- great pools
of emeralds, celadon-
the flowers at their fringes-
white stars, blood spots-
arcing under the wind.

The land is made of curves.
Clouds wheel in and out
of their own whiteness.
The wind is blurring
the world’s colors.
They are all within one another.
