The Trees seem to beckon

as the Sun sinks low,

but the Heat keeps me apart

from the World I’d like to know.

Clouds, obscure! Sun, blink!-

for a short Moment-

so I may venture,

and- no more- lament.

Were the Stars my Eyes,

I could truly see-

not just worldly Beauty-

but- vast Eternity.

I never knew that

opening the white door,

leaving the painted white porch,

and walking into the grass,

into the trees, out

onto the hill,

would open up a new world for me-

one that was not even far

from home-

until I did so.

Yellow fingers sweep the clouds away,

extend to brush my skin-

I feel the gentle, warm caress.

The world illuminates:

houses, fields, trees, lakes brightened.

Snow dissipates, ice dwindles in drips,

both glint all the same.

Here is the change

as everything wakes from cold slumber

and will stir into flower and fervor.

Now I wonder

if I’m someone who knocks

and tries to bring people

out of their loneliness, or

if I’m the person behind the door

living in my own world,

but shutting other people out

at the same time…

Wheat Fields Under Cloudy Skies

painting by Vincent van Gogh

Sky with its blue scales
does not daunt
pastoral fields- great pools
of emeralds, celadon-
the flowers at their fringes-
white stars, blood spots-
arcing under the wind.

The land is made of curves.
Clouds wheel in and out
of their own whiteness.
The wind is blurring
the world’s colors.
They are all within one another.

One day, I went out,

and the World Struck my Eye-

the Hills- the Grass- pleaded-

and I could only comply

by venturing forth

into the Warm air-

this solace, like Eternity,

was not simple- but- Fair.
